A J-1 Research Scholar is a nonimmigrant exchange visitor who comes to the United States to conduct research, teach, or consult in their field of expertise at an eligible host organization. Research Scholar programs may last up to five years under an authorized J-1 sponsor like Stage-Global.
The maximum duration for the J-1 Research Scholar category is up to five years, subject to program eligibility, sponsor approval, and compliance with J-1 regulations.
Common documents include an Offer or Support letter outlining your role and program duration, host organization contact information, a host agreement (provided by Stage-Global), and any additional program-specific forms. Stage-Global provides a document checklist during the intake process.
Applicants should have appropriate academic or professional credentials and demonstrable expertise relevant to the proposed program.

Some J-1 programs are subject to a two-year home-country physical presence requirement (212(e)), which may require you to return to your home country for two years after the program before obtaining certain U.S. visas or permanent residence. This is typically only the case if your program is government funded. Stage-Global will cover this in more detail during your intake meeting.

A change of host organization requires sponsor approval and an updated DS-2019. Participants should notify Stage-Global and their current host organization as soon as possible so eligibility and required compliance steps can be reviewed.
In many cases, individuals who are currently in the United States in another eligible visa status (such as F-1 / OPT, E2, B1, H-1B, and other categories) may apply for a change of status to J-1 Research Scholar. Individuals who are already in J-1 status have different requirements and need to complete consular processing outside the United States. Contact Stage-Global to discuss your specific circumstances.
If your visa is denied, please notify Stage-Global immediately. We will review your case with you, explain your available options, and process any applicable refunds in accordance with our cancellation and refund policy.
